Good news – not only will this blog stay online (after considerable thought) but with a desire to refocus and do something new, I have a new site which will be available in a couple of days time

blog.londonliberal.org.uk

Not too much point in clicking on it yet, as the domain is in process of server propagation and will not be available generally until Friday.

So what will this new site be all about?

In no aprticular order or preference:

  • LibDem activities in London
  • Reports about our GLA AM’s and what they are up to
  • Guest contibutors and articles from AM’s, MP’s and councillors
  • London campaign issues
  • and more things which are all plastered on post-it notes on my wall at the moment

If you are a London LibDem and want to be a contributor, have thoughts on what should be featured (a campaign you are interested in etc) or have any comments in general, please post a reply or contact me on Twitter @ChrisLibDemNW1 and lets talk about it!

I look forward to hearing from you all soon.

Thanks

chris

Lib-Lab or Lib-Con alliance?

After watching the outcome of the election, and the realisation that a hung-parliament was the outcome, I realised that although we had stopped the Tories from achieving power, that there was the very high probability that they would come to power via a coalition.

If this was the case, how long would the coalition last? 6 – 12 -18 months>

What concessions would the Tories make?

What would we have to give up?

Would we get any cabinet posts?

Also, as a sideline, what happened to the claimed youth vote (first time voters) who where enthused by Nick Clegg? Did they vote?

Since Nick Cleggs remarkable rise to the top of most YouGov polls courtesy of the live TV debate shown last week, certain media outlets have started to delve deeper into the party’s policies and proposals if they did in fact win the general election.

This has brought about, unsurprisingly, condemnation from most right-wing publications that feel this usurping of the electorate to be unfair to their political allegiances. Writing in the Daily Mail today Leo McKinstry has let off a barrage of criticisms aimed at the political party’s immigration policy

The feeling he levies at the newly popular Lib Dems is that their idea’s about UK visas and an amnesty on illegal immigrants living here for more than 10 years are as disastrous as Labour’s ‘open borders’ strategy of the last decade.

“The truth is that, once granted, an amnesty would act as a magnet for migrants from all over the world.”

This view is however, interestingly, not shared by the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson. The floppy haired Conservative has said that he believes an amnesty on immigrants through earned citizenship would be an excellent idea.

This both sides agree would be based on factors such as amount of time living in the UK, no criminal record and proof that they contribute to the society in which they live.

So while it appears the national newspapers that are clearly in favour of a Conservative government, feel that the Tories and Lib Dems are miles apart in terms of a strategy for UK immigration. The coming together of idea’s from the London Mayor and the Liberal Democrat leader serves as an indication that they are not as crazy as is being goaded.

Finally, have had my nomination and other paperwork all signed for Westminster City Council Elections.

Standing in Church Street Ward – paper candidate, but I will do my best to increase the share of votes :-)
